Chairman of the Board
United Contractors Midwest

“If you’re not failing, you’re not doing. You need to go out there and experience things.”

Mike Cullinan was born in Pekin, where he lived until 1969 when his family moved to Peoria. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and following an interest in law, obtained his JD from the University of Illinois. He practiced law for 10 years before returning to the family business, R.A. Cullinan & Son. The firm was founded in 1913 in Tremont by his grandfather and was run by Mike’s father until his passing in 1982. Mike now serves at Chairman of the Board and is proud to have the fourth generation of the family serving with him at the company.

United Contractors Midwest (UCM) was created in June 2001 with the combination of R.A. Cullinan and Son, Freesen, Rowe Construction and Illinois Valley Paving. The combined companies performed over $170 million of work on the I-74 upgrade through Peoria in Central Illinois in 2005 and 2006. It is an example of the complete package of capabilities the company possesses: concrete paving, asphalt paving, bridge and structure work, aggregates, earthwork and sewer/sanitary work.

Mike’s commitment to the tri-county area has led him to serve on numerous boards and he currently follows his passion to prepare the next generation as a member of the Board of Trustees for Bradley University.
